John was born on Friday, 13 March 1711 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut. John married Esther Stanley on 21 February 1739 in Hartford County, Connecticut. In 1745, the family moved to Goshen, New York. He fought in the French & Indian War. On 31 October 1760, the Colonial Assembly appointed him "Lieutenant of the East Company in Goshen." He purchased large amounts of land in hopes of making his fortune. Unfortunately he met with some misfortune & died poor. John's wife, Esther, died on 19 November 1770 in Goshen, Orange County, New York, leaving him a widower. John departed this life on Saturday, 22 October 1785 in Goshen, Orange County, New York. He was buried at Goshen, Orange County, New York, in the Goshen West Side Cemetery.

February 21, 1739 Esther Stanley, who was 5th in line from John Stanley, Sr., who d. on the passage from England in 1634. She d. November 19, 1770 aged 72. They removed in 1745 to Goshen. He served in the French & Indian War and October 31, 1760, the Colonial Assembly appointed him "Lieutenant of the East Company or Train Band in Goshen." He engaged in business, speculated largely in lands & finally meeting with misfortune, died Poor.
He & his wife are buried in the Goshed West Side Cemetery where the tombstone still stands, errected by their grandson, Theodore North, with the inscription: "In Memory of John North who died October 22, 1785, aged 72 years." Four of his sons served in the Revolution. Children: i. Esther b. at Farmington, March 17, 1739; m. November 11, 1758 Isaac Humphrey of Goshen, son of Samuel & Hannah [Phelps] Humphrey. ii. Abijah b.
