Louis-Treffle Merand

     Louis-Treffle was born on Monday, 14 September 1829 in Ste-Anne-de-La-Perade, Champlain County, Quebec, Canada. He was christened on the same day there in Ste-Anne-de-La-Perade Church.⁴ He came to Hungerford Township when he was sixteen. He possibly came with some of his brothers as their parents had both died. Louis-Treffle married Harriett Pelland dit Beausoliel, daughter of Francis Pelland dit Beausoliel and Ester Sylvestre, circa 1858 in Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. On the Agricultural Census of 1861, Trifley is on Lot 13 of the 1_ concession having 100 acres. On 2 March 1875, Louis Trifley Maurand obtains from Charles Maurand who purchased it on 25 March 1861 from Morris Switzer & wife, fifty acres on the southeast 1/4 of lot 17 in the eleventh concession.

Trifley is said to have only spoken French.
The name "Trifley" was originally "Trefle" as indicated in Tanquay's books on French Canadian families. Louis-Treffle Merand lived before 15 February 1861 at the north 1/2 of lot 13 of the 1_th concession, Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. It contained 100 acres. He appears on the 1861 Agricultural Census as owning this land but his name never appears on the land records for this property. It does appear that not all transactions were recorded. [klm]^5,6 15 February 1861, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Hungerford Township. Enumerated in this household were Trifley Mareran [29 Lower Canada], Harriett [20 Lower Canada], Leues [2 Upper Canada]. They lived in a one story log house. On the Agriculture Census: Trifley Murerow owned 100 acres, 40 being cultivated with a total value of $800.00. It's description - Norrh 1/2 of Lot 13 in the Concession 1? (ink blurred). [Note: from studying others on the census, it appears that it was the 12th concession-klm]^7,8 1871, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Hungerford Township. Enumerated in this household were Trifley Meareau [35 Quebec], Harriett [30 Ontario], Trifley [12 Ontario], Francis [10 Ontario], Margaret [7 Ontario], Ada [5 Ontario], Fredrick [2 Ontario]. Trifley's origin is French & Harriett's is Irish.⁹ On the 2nd of March 1875, Louis Trifley Maurand obtains from Charles Maurand the southeast quarter of lot 17 in the 11th concession containing 50 acres. Charles had purchased this land on the 25th of March 1861 from Morris Switzer & his wife. Charles most likely was a brother of Trifley. 1881, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Hungerford Township. Enumerated in this household were Trifly Maraund [49 Quebec], Harriett [40 Ontario], Louis Trifley [20 Ontario], Francis [18 Ontario], Margaret [17 Ontario], Addie [15 Ontario], Fredrick [13 Ontario], Phillip [9 Ontario], Thomas [6 Ontario], Annie [3 Ontario].¹⁰ In a deed dated 1883, Louis Trifley Maurand purchased lot 17 in the 11th concession in Hungerford Township, Hastings Count from Bryan Moffatt Bret containing 100 acres. This plot of land is adjacent to lot 17 in the 10th concession owned by Francis Meraw.¹¹ 6 April 1891, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Hungerford Township. Enumerated in this household were Triffley Merau [60 PQ PQ & PQ Farmer Catholic], Harriett [48 Ontario Ont & Ont], Ada [22 Ontario], Fredrick [20 Ontario], Phillip [18 Ontario], Thomas [16 Ontario], Anna [14 Ontario], Michael [10 Ontario], Ethel [6 Ontario].¹² On 26 January 1892, Louis Trifley Meraw & his wife deed to their son Trifley Meraw Jr. the southeast 1/4 of lot 17 in the 12th concession containing 50 acres except the C. A. R. right of way for the sum of $2,520.00.¹³ 31 March 1901, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Hungerford Township. Enumerated in this household were Trifley Meraw Sr. [22 November 1830 - 70 Quebec], Harriett [18 April 1842 - 58 Ontario], Frederick [13 October 1871 - 28 Ontario], Annie [8 July 1876 - 24 Ontario], Michael [3 July 1882 - 18 Ontario], Ethel [2 October 1885 - 15 Ontario].¹⁴ 1911, Louis-Treffle and his wife, Harriett, were listed on the Canadian Census at Village of Tweed. Enumerated in this household were Trifley Meraw Sr. [83 Quebec - October 1827], Harriet [68 Ontario - April 1843], Philip [34 Ontario - July 1876][DS]. [Note: The next household was Edward Beausoliel [82 Quebec - I? August 1828]].^15,16 Louis-Treffle died on Sunday, 21 September 1913 in Village of Tweed, Hungerford Township at his home on Moira Street at age 84 years and 7 days of heart failure.

Obituary: Death of Trifley Meraw

Another of Hungerford's pioneer settlers was called by death at his late home in Tweed on Sunday, September 21, in the person of Louis Trifley Meraw, aged 83 years.
Until three years ago, the deceased had enjoyed a robust constitution, but has since been declining in health and five weeks prior to his death was forced to take his bed. He was concious to the last, fully recognizing those who were at his bedside up to the moment of his death.
Deceased was born in the province of Quebec and came to Hungerford when he was sixteen years of age where he resided up to a few years ago when he retired to Tweed.
Besides his widow there are left to mourn his loss 4 daughters and 5 sons viz: Mrs. Fred Allore, Bogart: Mrs. Pollock; Mrs. Lemere; and Miss Addie, Detroit; Messrs Trifley, Frank, Thomas and Michael of Hungerford and Philip at home.
The funeral which was largely attended, was held on Tuesday, high mass being celebrated by Rev. Father Quinn at St. Carthage Church, after which the remains were placed in the vault at Sugar Island Cemetery. May his soul rest in peace. [Tweed Advocate - 25 September 1913]^17,18
