William Lewis Stremmel

William Lewis was born on Monday, 21 December 1846 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland. He was the son of George Ludwig Stremmel and Frederika Feiring. William married Catherine Derfler on 11 March 1875 in Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio.1 William & Catherine had children: Augusta A. [11/03/1876-8/06/1921][not married], Lydia Amelia [11/11/1878-3/19/1899][m. 6/28/1897 Marion Pugh] & Laura [5/10/1880-3/27/1969] [m. 11/05/1899 Thomas C. Lerch]. After the death of William his daughter Lydia was adopted by the John French Family. Laura was raised by her foster parents, Mrs. J. G. Drexel.2,3 16 June 1880, William and his wife, Catherine, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Bucyrus Township. Enumerated in this household were William Stremel [33 Maryland], his wife: Catherine [27 Pennsylvania], children: Augusta [3 Ohio] & Lydia [1/12 May Ohio]. William is the town clerk. [Note: The children on this census are entered wrong - it should read Augusta [3 Ohio], Lydia [1 Ohio] & Laura [1/12 Ohio]4 - Someone, likely the person who copied the census takers work, skipped down a line and put in Laura's age and then missing Laura on the census - KLM] On August 13, 1885, William is noted as lying very sick at his home on North Main street in an article in the Crawford County News.5 William departed this life on Friday, 14 August 1885 in Bucyrus Township at age 38 years, 7 months and 24 days.

- [S506] Note: Obituary of Laura Stremmel - Word was received here by Mrs. C. D. Lerch of Spruce avenue, of th death of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Laura J. Lerch, 88, of Bucyrus, widow of Thomas C. Lerch. Her death occurred at 4:50 p.m. Thursday [March 27, 1969] in the Bucyrus Methodist Home. She had been in failing health for five weeks. A native and life long resident of Bucyrus, she was born May 10, 1880, to William and Catherine Deffler Stremmel and reared by foster parents Mr. & Mrs. J. G. Drexel. Survivors besides the daughter-in-law here are two daughters, Mrs. Dale [Helen] Kimmel of Upper Sandusky and Mrs. Robert [Norma] Tabler, of Bucyrus, a son Emmett of Marine City, Mich., seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Her son C. D. Lerch, who lived in Sidney, died some years ago. Mrs. Lerch was a member of the Grace United Methodist in Bucyrus and had taught a church school class for 40 years. She also belonged to the women’s societies of the church and the Order of Eastern Star. Rev. Albert C. - [S506] Note: Thomas E. Lerch and Miss Laura Stremmel were quietly married at the home of George Drexel, near Spore, Sunay evening, by Rev. W. H. Munk, pastor of the Evangelical church. The bride is a daughter of Wm. Stremmel and is an accomplished young lady. The groom is a cousin of Squire J. N. Taylor with whom jhe has been making his home for the past few years. He is an industrious and well thought of young man and has made many friends since his coming to Crawford County. The young couple will make their home in Holmes township for the present.
