Emily Melissa married Martin Badgley Townsend, son of Samuel Townsend and Asenath Badgley, on 8 December 1858 in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Martin & Melissa had children: Flora Luella [9/01/1859][m. 11/28/1876 Eson W. Cooper], Isobel [4/07/1862-12/14/1909][m. 11/27/1879 George C. Fineout], Adella [4/07/1862-<1941][m. 4/07/1887 Mack Felton], Mac George [6/28/1864-11/09/1908][m. 4/26/1890 Nellie Grimes], Ned Edwin [1/09/1868-3/12/1962][m. 12/09/1890 Nora E. Grimes], Asemath [1/28/1871-7/28/1902][m. 1/28/1889 Scott Godley], Phila J. [9/18/1873][m. 5/05/1891 Arthur Richmond] & Robert [m. Enumerated in this household were Martin B. Townsend [44 Michigan], Emaly [43 New York], Adell [18 Michigan], George M. [16 Michigan], Ned [12 Michigan], Asneth [10 Michigan] & Phila [8 Michigan]. Emily has a lung disease.4 Emily's husband, an unknown person , died on 24 April 1883 in Stockbridge Township, Ingham County, Michigan, leaving her a widow.5 Emily departed this life in 1927 in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. She was buried at Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan, in the Plainfield Village Cemetery.6
