Robert Beacham

M, b. circa 1620, d. before 2 March 1690
     Robert was born circa 1620 in England. The name of Robert's frist wife is not known. Her given name was possibly Isabell. In the records of Ipwich, on 19 December 1648, Robert subscribed to pay 4 shillings a year for the pay of their leader until some other means of support could be found. By 1655, he has removed to Norwalk when he is rated at 174 pounds. Then on 11 March 1658 the Connecticut Court voted to allow Robert to inhabit Bankside.1,2 On 13 October 1664 Robert Beacham and Joseph Lockwood were made freeman at the same time according to Fairfield records.3,4 On 20 June 1668, Robert accompanied Elizabeth, Jessop to sign a deed her deceased husband's estate, in the North Riding of Yorkshire on Long Island.5 Robert Beacham and Elizabeth Jessop obtained a license to marry on 4 November 1668.6 Robert married 2nd Elizabeth Jessop after 4 November 1668 in Westport, Westchester County, New York, at Green's Farm.7 On the 26th of January 1668/69, Robert and Elizabeth acknowledge the sale to Thomas Hunt of the land and housing formerly owned by Edward Jessop, and which he and John Richardson purchased together.8 On 13 March 1683, an appeal was heard in the court at Fairfield between the plaintiff, Israel Newton, claiming right to land after the death of his father, Thomas Newton, and the defendant, Robert Beacham, in possession of the land located at Green's Farm, Westchester County, New York. the land remainded in possesion of Robert Beacham with the plaintiffs planning to appeal at the next session of court in October of the same year. The Beachams removed to Fairfield and Robert's son-in-law, Joseph Lockwood, was still there in 1715 when he helped establish a church.9 Robert made his will on 14 November 1688 at Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

The last will and testament of Mr. Robert Beacham, of Maximus Farms in Fairfield, in ye colonies of New England, being weak of body, but of sound understanding is as follows, viz: Item. I commit my soul into ye hands of my most merciful Savior, hoping for salvation by the alone merits and satisfaction of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and my body to a humble burial, and as for my worldly goods, my just debts having been first paid, I do dispose of them as follows, viz: - - - I give and bequeath to my grandchild Robert Lockwood all my lands and housing in said Fairfield, to enter upon and dispose of ye same after my wife’s decease, and saying within one year after ye same, fourscore pounds to my grandchild Susanna Lockwood, and threescore pounds a piece to my other grandchildren, John Lockwood and Sarah Lockwood, when they respectively arrive at age according to law; excepting only my second division in Compo, which I have already given to Edward Jessop. I give to my loving wife, Elizabeth Beacham, the use and improvement of all my houses and lands during her natural life, and the return of what estate I received with her, according to said former agreement, she keeping in repair the housing and fences. - - - I make and constitute my loving son-in-law, Joseph Lockwood, sole executor of this my last will and testament, so as to allow to my said wife seven pounds to lay out in a parcel for herself. - - - In witness whereof and for confirmation whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of November in the year of our Lord 1688, in the 4th year of his Majestie’s reign - - - Robert Beacham.10

Robert departed this life in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut. The inventory of Robert's estate was taken on Thursday, 2 March 1690. The estate was appriased at 179 pounds 10 shillings. His will was probated on 10 March 1690. Both Robert's will and inventory of his estate were proved at this time.
