Edmund Burke Underhill

     Edmund was born on Sunday, 25 August 1833 at Clinton Corners, Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Alfred Mott & Lydia Phebe Underhill. Edmund married Gertrude Colden Ferris, daughter of Lindley M. Ferris and Caroline Murray, on 10 October 1867 in Poughkeepsie. 26 July 1870, Edmund and his wife, Gertrude, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Poughkeepsie. Enumerated in this household were Alfred Underhill [64 New York], Edward [35 New York], Gertrude [25 New York], Lindley [2 New York], John Cavin [20 Ireland], Bridget Fogerty [25 Ireland] & Maggie Tuthill [11 New York].¹ 8 June 1880, Edmund and his wife, Gertrude, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Poughkeepsie. Enumerated in this household were E.B. Underhill [44 New York], Gertrude [36 New York], Lindley [11 New York], Bessie C [8 New York], Gertrude C [5 New York], Edmund [3 New York], Harold [1 month New York] & Laborers: Rachel Smith [17 New York] & William Freitchel [20 New York].² Edmund departed this life on Tuesday, 22 March 1887 in Poughkeepsie at age 53 years, 6 months and 25 days. He was buried at Poughkeepsie in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Edmund B Underhill Died March 22, 1887 - Aged 53 years.³
