Reverand Azariah Mather

Azariah was born on Wednesday, 29 August 1685 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was a minister at the Congregational Church of Saybrook in 1710, and a tutor at Saybrook College. He continued his ministry until 1732. Azariah departed this life on Monday, 11 February 1726 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at age 40 years, 5 months and 10 days. He was buried there in Cypress Cemetery. The inscription on his stone reads: "Here lyeth the Body of Rev. Azariah Mather born at Windsor August 22, 1685 expired in Saybrook February 11, 1736. He was a faithful minister, a general scholar, an eminent Christian, a very great sufferer, but now in glory a triumpher."
