     Isaiah Vail was born on Monday, 18 February 1805 in Howells Depot, Orange County, New York. Isaiah married Frances Emily Webb on 7 January 1828 in New York. In 1837 they moved to Elmira, New York where they purchased a farm nearby, and with the assistance of a cousin, William M. Mapes, conducted the first milk route in Elmira. Soon thereafter Isaiah became a Methodist itinerant preacher in which he continued for nine years.. In 1847 he settled at Webb's Mills, New York where he established a general store. In 1867 he disposed of his business & moved to Pine City, New York where he spent the remainder of his life. 20 September 1850, Isaiah and his wife, Frances, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Southport Township, Chemung County, New York. Enumerated in this household were I. V. Mapes [44 New York], his wife: Frances [42 New York], children: Harriett [12 New York], Mary [9 New York], & William J. [22 New York-clerk]. I. V. is a merchant.3 15 August 1860, Isaiah and his wife, Frances, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Southport Township, Chemung County, New York. Enumerated in this household were Isaiah V. Mapes [55 New York], his wife: Frances [53 New York], chuildren: Harriett [23 New York] & Frances [19 New York]. Isaiah is a merchant.4 22 July 1870, Isaiah and his wife, Frances, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Southport Township, Chemung County, New York. Enumerated in this household were Isaac V. Mapes [65 New York], his wife: Frances [63 New York], Abram Breece [30 New York-farmer], & Mary [28 New York]. Isaac is an editor.5 Isaiah departed this life on Wednesday, 3 March 1880 in Pine City, Chemung County, New York. He was buried at Pine City, Chemung County, New York, in the Pine City Cemetery.
