On Oct. 14, 1820 he married Mary Reeve, daughter of David Reeve and Hester Wickham who was born Apr. 2, 1799 and died Apr. 26, 1830. On Sept. 7, 1831 he married Mrs. Mary Willson Taylor Finn, widow of Robert Finn and daughter of John Taylor and Sarah McCamley. She was born Oct. 6, 1800 and died Feb. 9, 1873. John Vail Mapes was buried in the Mapes Family Burying Ground at Howells, N. Y. Mary Reeve Mapes was buried in the cemetery of First Congregational Church, Middletown, N. Y., and later removed to Hillside Cemetery. Mary Finn Mapes was buried in the Howells Cemetery. Their children were: by 1st wife: Clarissa Mapes b. Aug. 11, 1821 d.
