     Smith was born on Friday, 31 December 1756 in Blooming Grove, Orange County, New York. Smith married Rachael McKnight on 10 October 1779 in New York. The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Smith Mapes [13:2].2 Smith departed this life in 1820 in Steuben Cotu, Oneida County, New York.

  1. [S76] Frank Mapes Ham, Mapes Family of America, page 167 - SMITH MAPES was born at Blooming Grove, Orange County, N. Y. on Dec. 31, 1756. He was one of the signers of the Revolutionary Pledge. On Oct. 10, 1779 he married Rachel McKnight. The 1790 Census shows him in the Town of Wallkill, then Ulster Co. now Orange County; the 1800 Census shows him in the Town of Frederickton, Steuben County, N. Y. There is no information at hand to show his later whereabouts or the time or place of his death. Their children were: i. Samuel Mapes b. Oct. 16, 1780, ii. Elizabeth Mapes May 18. 1785, Jesse Mapes b. July 7, 1788, Ira Mapes b. Sept. 4, 1790, William Warrington Mapes b. Aug. 17, 1792, Thomas Mapes b. July 17, 1894, Erastus Mapes b. July 12, 1797, Mary Mapes b. June 16, 1801, Isaac Mapes b. Oct. 16, 1803.
