Mary Abbott1

Mary was born circa 1631 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She mentions to Roger Williams her intent to marry Thomas Walling. Then on 22 February 1651, Roger wrote to the Town Fathers:
"I understand that one of the orphanes of our dead friend Daniel Abbot, is likely [as she herself told me] to be disposed of in marriage. Tis true she is now come to some yeares: But who knows not, what neede the poore maid hath of your fatherly care, council & direction. I would not disparage the young man [for I heare he hath bene Laborious] yet with your leave I must say I durst not, you will not give your daughters in marriage to such whose lives have bene in such a course without some good assurance & Certificate of / his / not being engaged to other women or otherwayes criminous, as also of his Resolution to forsake his former course , least [this Inquirie being neglected] The Maid & ourselves repent when Miserie hath befallen her & a just Reprove & charges befall ourselves of which we have no neede."2
Mary married Thomas Walling I, son of Ralph Wallen and Joyce (?), at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.3 On 28 July 1651, It was "ordered that Thomas Harris & Nicolas Power, shall equally divide the Goates & goods, & what else that belongs unto the two Orphans of Daniel Abbot deceased & possese Thomas Walling, husband of Mary Abbot, the daughter of the said deceased with one halfe of the said Goats, goods etc / & yjr other halfe to order for Daniel Abbot, the sone of the said deceased best advantage. It was ordered that Thomas Walling & John Jones, received into town-fellowship as Towns-men, & after the order of John Browne " His friend, George Way, was his neighbor.
.4 In November 1662, Mary requested that the town take a boy that had been liiving with them that she can no longer take care of him. Her husband has been gone for some time.5 Mary departed this life before 19 June 1669 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.6

In a letter of 22 January 1650/51 to the Town of Providence, concerned with several matters involving orphans and unsettled estates, Roger Williams asked that special care be taken of “one of the orphans of our dead friend Dan. Abbot, is likely (as she herself told me) to be disposed of in marriage”. This would be the only daughter, Mary, just before her marriage to Thomas Walling. - [S1790] William B.
