John King

M, b. circa 1765, d. before 15 January 1816
Important Notes: After doing a lot of research, we are not absolutely sure that Mary Vail is the wife of this John King.

Johnathan King of Deerpark-

…1810 census: Deerpark, Orange County, New York – Sheet 455 - Jonathan King [10001:11100]. He is listed as over 45 making him born before 1765, his eldest son, John is not on the census with him – this is the only census he appears on
… will dated 9 October 1815: “In the name of God, Amen, I, Jonathan King, of the Town of Deerpark, Orange County, New York . . . He mentions his wife, Mary, daughter, Phebe [a minor], sons: John [eldest] & Hiram V. [minor]. He made Erastus Mapes, John Rhoads & Benjamin Woodward his executors. Joshua Penny, David Campbell & Silas Gildersleeve were witnesses. - His will was probated on 15 January 1816
…Erastus Mapes was married to Phebe Vail who had a sister, Mary, born 1774. This Mary is probably Jonathan’s wife, which would make Erastus his brother-in-law.
…1820 census – has Mary King with Erastus Mapes right above her – this might be the widow of John of Wallkill.
… Johnathan and Mary had children John Phebe & Hiram [1802-12/05/1864]. The 1810 indicates there were other children, that possibly had died by the writing of the will.
… The tombstone of Hiram gives his name as Hiram Vail Mapes. The conclusion then is that Jonathan was married to Mary Vail, sister of Phebe who was married to Erastus Mapes.

John King of Wallkill –

… 1810 census [02101:00201]. John was listed as over 45, making his birth before 1765.
…1820 census – has Mary King with Erastus Mapes right above her.
…Listed right below him on the 1810 census is Nathaniel Mapes& William Coleman was on the same page 12 names higher.
…Nathaniel is the son of Enos Mapes, a brother of Erastus Mapes.
…John King marries circa 1812 in Wallkill Catherine Dubois [born 3/03/1791]. They have a daughter Mary Jane King [born 2/04/ 1813]. Catherine marries second 5/10/1820 in Wallkill, John Greeleaf. Mary Jane marries on 1/01/1831 in Wallkill Samuel Addison Mapes [born 9/11/1809], son of Nathaniel Mapes. Nataniel Mapes was the son of Enos Mapes, who was the brother of Erastus Mapes. Assumption is being made that on the 1810 census of John King, the son in the age bracket 16-25 is this John King married to Catherine Dubois.
... Neither the John King born before 1765 or John King married to Catherine Dubois have died by 1820.
…John King born before 1765, only appears on the 1810 census -no other

…Could Johnathan King of Deerpark and John King of Wallkill be the same person? Both were born before 1765; both are found only on the 1810 census; both died between 181 0 & 1820; both have a connection to Erastus Mapes.
…The 1820 census of Wallkill has Mary King listed as over 45, making her birth before 1775. Listed right above her is Erastus Mapes – She could be the widow of John King of Wallkill or Jonathan King of Deerpark
…1830 census Wallkill lists Mary King and in the next household is Hiram King. This showing that Mary King of Deerpark was living in Wallkill next to her son.
…Mary Vail, daughter of William Vail & Phebe Vail – her brother, Josiah, in his will of 1827, names his sister Mary King.
…the two 1810 censuses appear not to match – there could have ben a loss of a son and depending on who gave the information could be the discrepancy of the ages.
...Mary Vail, daughter of William & Phebe was born in 1774 - neither census entered her in trhe correct age bracket
