     James was born on Sunday, 25 May 1783 in Mattituck in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. James departed this life on Wednesday, 21 February 1787 in Mattituck in the Town of Southold at age 3 years, 8 months and 27 days.3 He was buried there in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was buried iin grave V 81. His stone reads: "James, son of Mr. Parshal and Mrs. Charity Howel who died Feb. 21st 1787 3 years, 8 mos. and 22 days.
