David was born on Wednesday, 18 November 1676 in Mattituck in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. David married Mary Parshall, daughter of James Parshall and Elizabeth Gardiner, circa 1701 in the Town of Southold.5 David's wife, Mary, died on 22 December 1742 in Mattituck in the Town of Southold leaving him a widower.6 David made his will on 12 February 1756 at the Town of Southold.
In the name of God, Amen. I, David Howell, of the town of Southold, in Suffolk County, yeoman, being of sound mind. I leave to my eldest son David 50 pounds, and also all that farm where he now liveth, and one half of my meadow at Saw Mill brook, which I bought of William Mapes. I leave to my second son Aaron all the land I bought of Jacob Asman, which he now has in possession; and also all my right of the Manor of St. George, and one half my meadow at Saw Mill brook, which I bought of William Mapes, Also one third of my right in the Parsonage, and one fourth of all my moveables. I leave to my third son Israel one fourth of all moveables, and all the land which I bought of my brother Jonathon Howell, bounded south & west by the lands of my brother Richard Howell, north by the Sound, & east by James Fanning. Also two lots of salt meadow on the south side of Peconic ricer, which my honored father gave me, Also all that Fresh meadow on the South side of the Peconic river, which I bought of m;y brother Jonathon Howell. I leave to my fifth son James one fourth of all moveables, and all that part of my land where he now lives, which he now has in possession, with the meadow belonging thereto. Also one third of my two lots of meadow on the Broad meadow, on the south side of rhe Peconic river, which I bought of John Howell, Also, one third of my right in the Parsonage. I leave to my fourth son Richard all my land & meadow not herein disposed of. and all the rest of my moveable estate. I leave to my daughter Mary Longbotham, 50 pounds, and my son David 50 pounds. He was buried there in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was buried in grave V 81. The inscription on his tombstone reads: David Howell died August 18, 1756 age 79 years. His will was probated on 25 August 1756. It was proved before William Throop, Surrogare. Additional Notes: It is noted in many sources that David Howell, son of Richard Howell of Southold, had several wives. The first wife being the mother of his children that are listed in his will of 1756. His second wife being Abigail Concklin, maiden name possibly being Case. His third wife being Lydia Holdridge/Hildreth. His fourth wife being, Mary with whom he is buried. Salmon lists the marriages of wives 2 & 3 and the deaths of wives 2 & 4 as well as David's.
In David's will, he clearly states the order of birth of his sons. From the tombstone of his 4th son Richard, which gives his age as 71 at his death in 1783. This means that the three older sons would have been born before 1712, the year of Richard's birth. It is likely that James and Mary would have been born before 1717, the date of the recorded marriage of the widow, Abigail Conklin. Thus, the known children of David would have been of his first wife.
As summarized below, Salmon has two daughers of a David Howell dying in December of 1719 & 1720. If the Conklim marriage is to this David then those two daughters would be the children of Abigail and she would have had no other known children by David. On that same note, if Abigail had had children by Jacob, where are they, if they had been raised by David, it seems he would have mentioned them in his will. As to the marriage mentioned in Salmon to the "wid Hilderidg", it is beleived that that item is referring to the "07 Nov 1726 - David Howell, the son of David and Mary (Herrick) Howell, who married Lydia (Norris) Hildreth". Speaking of this marriage to Lydia, Abigail Conklin dies in April of 1726, she could have been married to the same David Howell that marries Lydia in November of that same year. It is more likely that a widower with or without children would marry rather quickly and usually did in this time period. Since it is clear that Salmon made reference to the second David in the marriage to the widow Hildreth, there is no reason to believe that he would not make reference to him on the death of his first wife. We have no clue as to when this David's first wife died, unless his first wife is the wife that he is buried with. Notice also that there are no daughters buried there from the 1719 or 1720 deaths, or any other wives for that matter. Another point, the dates on the wife that is buried beside David are consistent with the dates of Mary Parshall, who he married around 1700. From the above, we believe that David Howell, son of Richard Howell had one wife, Mary Parshall, and that the references to the two other marriages are both referencing the same David Howell, the son of David Howell and Mary Herrick.

It is possible that this "Aaron Howell" was the son of David Howell. If so, then David Howell might have been the father of another daughter, Hannah, and his first wife, and the mother of most, if not all, of his children, would have been a daughter of Richard Clark. She has been entered into the International Genealogical Index as "Hannah Clark", but we have not determined the basis for this entry.
Although it was recorded that "David Howel & Wid Lid Hilderidg" were married on 2 Nov 1726 ( ), it is unlikely that this David2 Howell was the one concerned. Rather, it is likely that David Howell, the son of David and Mary (Herrick) Howell, who married Lydia (Norris) Hildreth, was the subject of this record ( ).
It has been reported that the second wife of David Howell was born "Abigail Case ( ). What we do know is that the children's names are like those of David Parshall's; Mary is the same age as David's wife; the name Parshall is continued down the line; David's brother, Jacob married Margaret, daughter of David Parshall.
