Phebe Haviland

F, b. 27 November 1770, d. 19 May 1801
     Phebe was born on Tuesday, 27 November 1770. She was the daughter of Ebenezer & Jane Haviland. An unknown person married, son of John Ferris and Marianna Hunt, the 2nd day of the second month of 1791 in New York. Elijah & Phebe had children: Elijah [6/10/1790], Anna [2/26/1793-08/19/1805], Phebe Jane [11/06/1797][m. 3/17/1817 Edmund Underhill] & John Haviland [11/17/1800-11/04/1862][m. 8/08/1825 Jane W. Underhill]. In the wills of Phebe's parents, they mention her children.1 Phebe departed this life on Tuesday, 19 May 1801 in Throgs Neck, Westchester County, New York, at the family home "Grove Farm" at age 30 years, 5 months and 22 days.

    "Know all men by these presents That I Ebenezer Haviland of Westchester in the County of Westchester and State of New York being in good health and of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this present writing to contain my last will and testament in manner and form following - - First, I give unto my nephew Anthony B. Haviland my silver watch and coat-of-arms, my silver shoe and knee buckels and all my wearing apparel and 50 pounds in cash. Second, I give unto my grandchildren Anna Ferris, Phebe Jane Ferris and John Haviland Ferris 2000 pounds lawful money of New York to be equally divided between them share and share alike on their arrival at lawful age if either of them should die under lawful age leaving lawful issue then to such issue if more than one in their equal proportions but if either of my said grandchildren should depart this life under lawful age without lawful issue their part shall to the survivor of or suvivors equally between them share and share alike but if they should all depart this life under lawful age without lawful issue then my will is that 500 pounds of their legacy shall go to their father Elijah Ferris and the remainder to go to my daughter Ann Haviland and my will is that my executors hereinafter named shall put my grandchildren legacies out at interest at the risk of the lagatees and pay them when the girls are 18 and the boys 21 years old. Thirdly I give unto my loving wife Jane Haviland as long as she remains my widow and no longer one room on the first floor and one room on the second floor in my house such as she shall choose, the use of the half of the cellar with room and kitchen the pasturing of one cow and one horse and wintering; half of the garden and the privilege of getting what fruit she may want for her own use off the place. I also give her my riding chaise. Fourthly, I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Haviland all my real estate whatsoever and wheresoever. Fifthly, all the residue and remainder of my estate I give unto my wife Jane Haviland and my daughter Ann Haviland equally between them share and share alike and to their heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby declare that my last will is that the foresaid legacies and bequests to my said wife are intended to be in lieu and bar of her dower. Lastly, I constiute nominate and appoint my wife Jane Haviland Executrix and my brother Benjamin Haviland and my friend Samuel Parsons Executors of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22nd day of 6th month in the year of our Lord 1804".

Haviland 50 pounds and unto my niece Mary Pancost widow of Solomon Pancost 50 pounds and unto my niece Charity Haviland 50 pounds. Secondly, I give unto my grand-daughter Phebe Jane Ferris one quarter part of all my estate. Thirdly, I give unto my grand-son John Haviland Ferris the one quarter of my estate also and my will is that in case of the death of my said grand-daughter Phebe Jane Ferris before she shall have arrived of lawful age that her legacy shall descend to her brother John Haviland Ferris or in case of the death of John Haviland Ferris before he shall have arrived at lawful age that his legacy shall in that case to to his sister Phebe Jane Ferris. Fourthly, I give unto my daughter Ann Haviland all the residue of my estate. Lastly, I do hereby constitute nominate and appoint my daughter Ann Haviland as executrix and my son-in-law Elijah Ferris and Samuel Parsons executors of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of the 7th month in the year of our Lord 1807".
