Samuel Hoyt [Haight] I

     Samuel was born on Wednesday, 1 May 1647 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. Samuel married Sarah (?) circa 1668. Samuel removed from Windsor to East Chester and later to Flushing, Long Island. In 1695, Samuel, along with four other men became original patentees of Harrison's Purchase in Westchester County. He was the first of family to use the name "Haight". 1698, Samuel and Sarah and his wife, [ROF:Flushing Town] were listed on the Flushing Town Census. Enumerated in this household were Sam'll Haight, Sarah his wife, sons: Nicholas, Jonathan, David, John, daughters: Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Phebe and one negro. He made his will the 21st day of the 7th month 1712.

" I Samuel Haight of Flushing in Queens County on Nassau Island yeoman being Sick and Weake of body but my understanding Sound and good and well knowing that it is appointed For all men to dye am Willing to Sett my house in order," etc. To his wife Sarah he bequeaths his movable estate, and also his homestead in Flushing, till his son John should marry or be of age ; after that she is to have one half of it during her life. He then gives land to his sons and his grandson, James Haight (whose father Sam .4 died just before the will was written), as given in onnection with their history. He then orders a negro man, Luke, to be sold, the money to be equally divided between his daus. Hannah and Phebe, and gives away three negro boys, Titus to dau. Sarah Titus, with whom he lives, Mingo to Hannah, and Bristo to Phebe. He uthorizes his executors (wife Sarah Haight, and friends Robert Field and Wm. Willis) to. sell 200 acres of land, " part of my .Lott of Land in number Six of Harrisons purchase," Rye, Westchester Co., to discharge a debt, and divides the remainder of said lot equally among his five daus., Susanna Griffen, Sarah Titus, Mary Huystead, Hannah Haight, and Phebe Haight, who are also to have his movable estate after his wife's death. He then adds, " my will is that the four hundred acres of Land that I have condi tioned with John Harrison of East Jersey for in Lien or Exchange for my houses and Land in Amboy Shall be Equally Divided between my four Sons (viz :) to Nicholas Haight, Jonathan Haight, David Haight and John Haight . . . . and If Said Exchange or conditions for Exchange should not be effected, then my houses and Land at Amboy Shall be Equally Divided amongst my four Sons above named."

. Samuel departed this life in the 7th month of 1712 in the Town of Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York.² His will was probated on 21 October 1712. The will was recorded at New York City.
