John was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He was christened there on 15 August 1620 in St. Thomas Church. John married Anna Almy, daughter of William Almey and Audrey Barlowe, circa 1648 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. John was general recorder of Rhode island in 1652; general solicitor in 1657; attorney-general between 1657 & 1660; assistant between 1600 & 1690, and deputy governor between 1690 & 1700. John departed this life on Tuesday, 27 November 1708 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. He was buried there in Spring Greene Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Here Lyeth the body of John Greene Esq. late Dept. Governor - he departed this life in ye 89 year of his age November 27 1708.3
