FatherSir Richard Grey, 2nd Baron of Codnor b. 1281, d. 1351
John was born in Derbyshire, England, at Codnor Castle. John spent his entire life in the service of his king, beginning at a young age in 1330, when he fought in Flanders. As well as being noted as a worthy warrior in battle, he was also known for his skills in Tournament josts. Because of the great number of years and the great number of battles that he was of service to his king, in 1371, he was given an exemption for life for any duties pertaining to his offices. In spite of the exemption, John continued to carry out his duties and answered the summons to parliament from 1372 until his death.1 John departed this life in 1392 in Derbyshire, England, at Codnor Castle. Since his son, Henry, had predeceased him, his grandson, Richard, became his heir and the Lord of the Manor of Condor.
