Laurent Gouin

     Laurent was born in Rossay, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France. He was christened there on 26 February 1636 in St-Etienne Church.¹ On 10 April 1657, Laurent signed a contract with Abel Cherbonnier to work in New France. On or about 10 April 1657, Laurent & his brother Mathurin left La Rochelle aboard the ship "the Taureau", captained by Elie Tadourneau.. They arrived at Quebec on 21 June.^1,2 A contract was drawn up by notary Saverin Ameau, for the marriage of Laurent and Marie-Therese Gallien. It was signed on 22 October 1665 in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. It was noted that he was the son of the late Vincent Gouin and the late Charlotte Galtier, and had resided at Angliers, France. It also noted that Marie was born in St-Come, Paris and was the daughter of the late Jean Gallien and Marguerite Dupont..³ 1666, Laurent and Marie-Therese were listed on the Canadian Census in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Lurent Gouin [26 years] and Marie Therese Paulinier [24 years].⁴ 1667, Laurent and Marie-Therese were listed on the Canadian Census in Comte de Champlain, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Lurent Gouin [30 years] and Marie Paumier [30 years] & a domestic servant, Louis Jouan [23 years].⁵ 1681, Laurent and Marie-Therese were listed on the Canadian Census in Champlain, Les Chenaux County, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Lurent Gouin [40 years] and Marie Gallien [40 years] and a servant, Marie [10 years].⁴ Laurent departed this life on Wednesday, 13 November 1686 in Champlain. He was buried there in the churchyard of la Visitation on Thursday, 14 November 1686.⁶
