Marie Duteau

     Marie was born on Sunday, 21 August 1639 in La Rochelle, Bishopric of La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes, France. She was christened there on 25 August 1639 in the Calvinist Temple.¹ On 17 April 1658, she signed a contract to work for Pierre Denys for a period of 3 years, receiving 30 livres per year. Soon after Marie left France with her mother and two siblings aboard the ship "Le Prince Guillaume" for Quebec.² Marie married Michel LeMay on 15 June 1659 in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, at the Cathedral de l'Assomption.³ Michel and Marie had children: Michel [1660-7/02/1712][m. 4/22/1686 Catherine Jobin], Joseph [1661-8/12/1707][m. 6/04/1686 Agnes-Madeleine Gaudry], Marie-Madeleine [1663][m. 12/31/1690 Louis Houde], Ignace [1665][m. 11/24/1687 Anne Girard], Marie-Jeanne [1667-5/24/1741][m. 12/31/1684 Etienne Denevers], Charles [7/__/1669-9/14/1733][m. 5/26/1691 Louise Houde], Pierre [1671][m. 2/07/1695 Marie-Anne Germain], Jean-Baptiste [1673-12/17/1731][m. 12/31/1700 Marie-Helene Boucher] & Francois-Xavier [1674]. 1666, Marie and her husband, Michel, were listed on the Canadian Census at Trois-Rivieres. Enumerated in this household were Michel Lemey [36 years], Marie Dutost [26 years], Charles [6 years], Joseph [5 years], Marie [4 years], Ignace [1 year], brother: Jacques Dutost [23 years], & servant: Pierre [20 years].⁴ 1667, Marie and her husband, Michel, were listed on the Canadian Census at Trois-Rivieres. Enumerated in this household were Michel Lemai [38 years], Marie Dutau [27 years], Michel [9 years], Joseph [6 years], Marie [4 years], Ignace [2 years] & Jeanne [1 year].⁴ Marie died before 12 April 1677 in Quebec, Canada, the day Michel married Michelle Ouinville & after the birth of her son, Xavier in 1674.⁴
