Sophia Ann Collins

Sophia Ann was born in 1797 in Massachusetts. Sophia Ann married John Torrey, son of Captain William Torrey and Mehitable Baldwin, on 25 February 1824 in Richmond Township, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.1 25 October 1850, Sophia and her husband, John, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Berkshire, Tioga County, New York. Enumerated in this household were John Torrey [54 New York], Sophia [52 Massachusetts], Amy Collins [80 Connecticut]. He is a carpenter.2 7 August 1860, Sophia and her husband John were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Berkshire. Enumerated in this household were John Torrey [65 New York], Sophia [63 Massachusetts] & B B [56 New York]. John is a carpenter and B B is a tailoress.3 21 June 1870, Sophia and her husband, John, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Berkshire. Enumerated in this household were John Torrey [75 New York], Sophia [72 Massachusetts] & Betsy [65 New York]. John was a cabinet maker.4 Sophia departed this life in March 1875 in Berkshire at age 78 years. She was buried there in the Evergreen Cemetery. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Sophia A. wife of John Torrey Died March 1795 - Aged 75 years [the stone has been broken and repaired, but the day of death is unreadable].5 Her will was probated on 24 May 1875. On 3 April 1875, the court validated the will and set the date for the probation of the will. The sole executrix of her will was Betsey B Torrey, her sister-in-law.
