Joan Coleson
F, b. circa 1587
Joan was born circa 1587 in Westminister, County Middlesex, England. She was the daughter of John Francisci Coleson and Joan Bullock. Joan married John Atwood, son of Nicholas Atwood and Olive Harmon, on 25 July 1612 in Westminister, London, County Middlesex, England, at St. Martin's-in-the-Field.1
Important Notes: Many have thought that Mr. John Atwood and his wife Ann Lee who resided in the Plymouth Colony were the parents of the three Atwood borthers, John, Stephen and Henry. It is thought that these three brothers immigrated with their uncle John Atwood, who is indeed that gentleman referred to as Mr. John Atwood in colonial records. Mr. John Atwood was an Assistant Governor to Governor William Bradford in Plymouth Colony. This John Atwood [who died 27 February 1644] was also a brother to the John Atwood who was the father of the three previously mentioned brothers. It was not uncommon in that time period for a family to name two if not three siblings with a preferred or family name. It should also be noted that Mr. Atwood's wife Ann's death was recorded as being 1 June "probably" 1655. The date was actually 1 June 1654 and was the date of Ann's inventory. This same date has been assigned to the death of Joan [Coleson] Atwood. There has been no evidence found that John and Joan [Coleson] Atwood ever immigrated to New England. John and Ann [Lee] Atwood did not have children.2,3,4
