Mary was born in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. She has also been referred to as Mercy. She was christened there on 9 April 1648.3 Mary married William Symmes, son of Reverend Zachariah Symmes and Sarah Baker, circa 1677. Mary's husband, William, died on 22 September 1691 in Charlestown leaving her a widow. Mary married 2nd Reverand Samuel Torrey, son of William Torrey and Jane Haviland, on 30 July 1695 in Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.4 Mary's husband, Samuel, died on 21 April 1707 in Weymouth leaving her a widow.5 Mary made her will on 26 June 1720.
In the name of God Amen the twenty sixth of June 1720. I Mary Torrey of Weymouth in the county of Suffolk in New England being very sick and weak in body but of a perfect mind and sound memory thanks be to God therefor calling unto mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed once for all men to dye I make and ordain this my Last will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in descent manner, a Christian burial at tne discretion of my executors. Nothing doubting but at the general resurrection of the dead, I shall receive ye same by ye mighty power of God; and as touching such worldly estate whereof it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life; I give, demise and dispose of the same in the manner and form following. Imprimis: I give and bequeath to my eldest son William Symmes in Charlestown in the county of Middlesexx in New England my biggest brass pan; viz and to my son Timothy Symmes of cituat [Scituate] in ye county of Plymouth in New England, a rug, a pair of sheets - - my oldest brass Kettle now but to my son in law John Torrey, two of my pewter platers and four leather chairs; viz, to my daughter Mary Torrey all my close both good and bad; vuz to my daughter Elizabeth Torrey I give one bed ticken and feathers lying in my left chamber viz; I give to my son Nathaniel Symmes all my moveable estate of any kind and nature soever if it be in bills bonds or book debts; excepting only excepting what is before expressed to the ____of my children; and also I appoint my son Nathaniel Symmes and make and constitute him to be my sole executor of this my Last will and Testament; and I do hereby utterly disallow and revoke and disannul all and every former Testament with Legacies and bequeaths & willed; ratifying and confirming and no other to be my Last will and Testament and witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal ye day and year above mentioned signed sealed published and pronounced and declared by the said Mary Torrey as her Last Will and Testament in the presence of us the subscribers – Thomas Paine Ezra Whitmarshe John Whitmarshe.6
Mary departed this life on Wednesday, 12 March 1720/21 in Weymouth.7 Her will was probated on 20 March 1721.
