[Note: 1225, John fitz Philip, who had succeeded his father, Philip, to being Lord of Barliston granted the right for appointing the priest here ... - this indicates the time period for above. - klm] Barlaston is in Staffordshire.

Pearsall, History of the Pearsall Family, Volume I: Chapter 18 - Richard de Peshall, section 2 - Ancestry of Joan Chetwynd, pages 569-570 - John succeeded his father before 1210. We have a hint to that effect, but at the same time, it is certain that he attested charters as early as 1202-03, and so in his father's life time... of John, had given to Robert fitz Wonram, father of the Plaintiff, to hold in fee and inheritance at a rent of 26d. per annum. John de Chetwynd allowed his Father's Charter, but showed, that the plaintiff's father had been a Villain and had been redeemed from Serfdom by Adam de Chetwynd, but that the Plaintiff had been born before such. redemption. On this the Plaintiff withdrew his suit, but being poor was excused amercement, and was presented with 3 merks by John de Chetwynd, who further allowed him complete manumission (ibit quocunque voluerit) and acquitted him of all serfdom (servitude). Of course the Plaintiff lost the land...
3. [S916] John Burke, A Genealogical and Heraldic history of the extinct and dormant baronetcies, page 421 - Adam de Chetwynd. Lord of Chetwynd, left son John; John de Chetwynd died 1240; having had issue: 1. Sir John died 1280, whose son surrendered Chetwynd to his cousin as below; 2. Philip, ancestor of the Viscounts of Chetwynd, 3. Adam, whose son John became Lord of Chetwynd, and died 1354, leaving a son, Reginald, whose daughter & heiress, Joan de Chetwynd, married Richard de Peshall, who was sheriff of Shropshire 1374-1376 and had two daughters, Joyce, married Pigott and took Chetwynd to that family, & Isabellamarried Thomas Grosvenor of Bellaport.
