Eliza was born in Candlesby, Lincolnshire, England. She was christened there on 28 December 1817 in St. Benedict's Church.1 Elizabeth married Thomas Bethel Colton, son of William Bethel Colton and Sarah Bingham, on 8 November 1838 in Bottesford, Lincolnshire, England, at St. Peter's Church. William Addleshaw, a shoe maker & Lucy Chester were witnesses of their marriage.2,3,4 The family immigrated from Lincolnshire, England to Canada about 1843 settling in Bronte, Ontario where Thomas was a farmer & a shoemaker. They were both Baptists and belonged to the Walton Memorial Church; they also owned three lots in the line of the church.5 12 January 1852, Eliza and her husband, Thomas, were listed on the Canadian Census at Trafalgar Township. Enumerated in this household were Thomas Colton [37 England][shoe maker], his wife: Eliza [35 England], Thomas [13 England], Sarah [8 England], Mary Ann [6 Canada], Eliza [4 Canada], Jane [2 Canada], Jacob Colton [plumber & ___][25 England], George Colton [laborer][27 England]. All of the above were listed as Episcopalian.6 14 January 1861, Eliza and her husband, Thomas, were listed on the Canadian Census at the Village of Bronte, Trafalgar Township. Enumerated in this household were Thomas Colton [shoe maker][Church of England][46 England], Eliza [42 England] [Episcopal Methodist], Thomas [shoe maker][21 England] [Church of England], Eliza [11 UC][EM], Jane [9 UC][EM], Charlott [7 UC][EM], William [6 UC][EM]. Listed just before this family is the family of William Dixon Polllock. They lived in a one and a half story frame house built in 1840.7 2 April 1871, Eliza and her husband, Thomas, were listed on the Canadian Census at Halton District Trafalgar Township. Enumerated in this household were Thomas Colton [Church of England][56 England], his wife: Eliza [51 England], Charlotte [18 Ontario], William [15 Ontario], Jane [21 Ontario], Maggey [7 Ontario].8 4 April 1881, Eliza and her husband, Thomas, were listed on the Canadian Census at Trafalgar Township. Enumerated in this household were Thomas Colton [66 England - Church of Episcopal, English, shoemaker], his wife: Eliza [62 England - Church of Episcopal, English], Jane [33 Ontario - unsound mind], Maggie [17 Ontario].9 Eliza made her will on 10 September 1884.

That I Elizar Colton, wife of Thomas Colton, of Bronte, in the County of Halton, Providence of Ontario, Canada, of the age of 65 years, and being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following: to wit, my will is first, that my daughter Jane Colton shall receive all the profit, rent, use of benefit that may be derived from my real estate, after my death, during her life time, the said real estate consisting of six acres of land in the Town of Bronte in the County of Halton, Ont., being lots nos . 25 and 26 North of Triller St. and South of John St. And Second, that after the death of my daughter Jane Colton, my will is that the said land be sold and the proceeds be equally divided my remaining children who are Sarah Johnston, Mary Ann Cuneyworth, Elizar Jackson, Charlotte Pollock, William Colton and Maggie Colton, and I do nominate and appoint Maholn Bray and Alexander C. Orr, to be the executors of this my last Will and Testament.
In the testamony whereof I the said Elizar Colton do hereunto subscribe my name and affix my seal this tenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and eighty-four. [her signature]
Signed, sealed and declared by the said Elizar Colton to be her last Will and Testament in the presence of John D. McDonald and W. A. Johnson who at her request and in her presence have subscribed their names as witnesses hereto and in the presence of each other. John S. McDonald and W. A. Johnson, merchant.

Eliza died on Tuesday, 23 September 1884 in the Village of Bronte, Trafalgar Township from kidney disease that she had been suffering from for several months.11,12,13 She was buried there in Oakville in St. Jude's Church Cemetery.14
