Charles Bridges1

Charles was born in Canterbury, County Kent, England. He came to reside permanently in New York with Peter Stuyvesant in 1647.2 Charles married Sarah Cornell, daughter of Thomas Cornell and Rebecca Briggs, on 3 November 1647 at the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church in the City, County & State of New York.3,4 Charles was a Dutch English trader out of Virginia. He was the English Secretary for the Province under Gov. Stuyvesant, in 1652. He was in the Governor's council, Military Commissary, in 166o. He was a patentee of Flushing & of Gravesend. He lived on Pearl Street, New York City. Charles began the will below for himself and his wife, Sarah.
The will of Charles Bridges of Flushing and his wife Sarah Bridges, having in mind our great and decaying age, leave unto our son Thomas Willett half our land in Newton’s Neck as by deed of gift will appear, and the balance of our estate to the survivor of us. If I depart, first, _______pounds to my brother Thomas Bridges.
The will was never finished or signed possibly due to illness and/or an untimely death.5 Charles departed this life on Wednesday, 5 August 1682 in the Town of Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York. His estate was worth £400. His will was probated on 22 August 1682. His wife was appointed administrix.6

Testimony of Myndert Courten that on June 13 Charles Bridges said he had made his will leaving estate to the survivor, Will in handwriting of Charles Bridges, though not signed as he died was admitted to court and Aug. 22, 1682 the wife Sarah Bridges was appointed administratrix (NYHS-W 1-118).
