Samuel Bissell

Samuel was born circa 1636. Samuel married Abigail Holcomb, daughter of Thomas Holcomb and Eliabeth (?), on 11 June 1658 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, at the First Parish Church.1 Samuel and Abigail had children: John 4/05/1659] [m.8/26/1680 Abigail Filley], Abigail Bissell [7/06/1661-4/19/1728] [m. 12/26/1678 James Eno], Jacob [3/28/1664-8/01/1694] [m. MaryGillett], Mary Bissell [9/15/1666-] [m. John Pettibone], Samuel [1/11/1668-3/04/1698] [m. Mary Buell], Benajah [6/30/1671-1700], Joshua [1674] Elizabeth [1/04/1677] [m. 1698 Samuel Sacket], Deborah [10/29/1679] [m. 3/24/1704 Stephen Pettibone], Hannah [9/18/1682-2/24/1717] [m. 3/28/1700 Nathaniel Phelps]. Samuel's wife, Abigail, died on 17 August 1688 in Windsor leaving him a widower.2 Samuel made his will on 2 August 1697.
I Samuel Bissell, Sen., of Windsor, doe make this my last will and testament. I give to my son Samuel £140 besides that land which I have already given him, on which his house standeth, which is about 6 acres. Item. I give to my two daughters Abigaile and Mary, which are already marryed, £20 to each beside what the have already had. Item. I give to my three younger daughter, Elizabeth, Deborah and Hannah, £75 apiece. All which legacies my will is that it shall be and remain to my children above named, to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give to my son Josjua all that meadow land at Simsbury, which belongs to me, which I bought of Mr. Stone and Jonathan Gillett [17 acres], excepting two acres which my son Jacob Bissell did improve in his life, which sd. Two acres I give to my grandson Jacob Bissell, son of Jacob Bissell decd. , if he live to the age of 21 years. In case he do not survive to that age, my son Joshua shall have it. Also, two acres of upland on ye north side of the brooke known by the name of Bissell’s Brooke, at Simsbury, I give to my son Joshua. I give to my grandson John Bissell, son of John Bissell decd. £5; and £2 10s. tho my granddaughter Abigaile Bissell. I give to my grandson Jacob Bissell my dwelling house at Simsbury. I give to my wife Mary 20s. in silver money, and for security of the payment of the £5 per annum which I engaged to pay her while she remained my widow, I make over 10 acres of my meadow land at the south end know as the Great Meadow. I nominate my son Samuel to be executor, and desire Jon Moore, Lt. John Higley, Matthe Allyn and Michael Taintor to be my overseers. – Witness: John Moore Sen. & John Higley Sen. – Samuel Bissell Sen.3

The wise disposeing providence of God having made a breach in my family by bereaveing of the son of my hope, whom I had nominated executor, has given me occasion ot add this my codicil: The estate that I had devised to my son Samuel [who is deceased] shall after my decease, be equally divided amongst my five daughters. . I appoint my sonn-in-law, James Enno, executor, and supervisors as above. 23 April 1698 - -Bissell, Sen - - Witness: Daniel Clarke, Martha Clarke.
He wrote a codicil to his will on 25 November 1700.
The testator nominates his son-in-law John Pettibone, Jr. , joint executor with James Enno; and to issue any differences that may arise in the division of the estate, he appoints his brother Benajah Holcomb and John and John Moore, Sen.
Samuel departed this life on Friday, 3 December 1700 there in Windsor.3 The inventory of Samuel's estate was taken on Friday, 10 December 1700 by John Moore Sen., Matthew Allyn & Benajah Holcomb. They appraised the value of the estate to be £495 3s. 7d.3 His will was probated on 16 December 1700. James Enno and John Pettibone Jr. presented the will to the court. The court accepted and proved the will.
