Adolph was born on Tuesday, 17 September 1844 in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Adolph married Elizabeth Hicks Leggett, daughter of Augustus Wright Leggett and Eliza Seaman, on 7 October 1882 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, at the family home at 169 Elizabeth. 18 April 1910, Adolph and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Citronelle Village, Mobile County, Alabama, at State Street. Enumerated in this household were Adolph Barthel [67 Germany] & his wife: Elizabeth H. [60 New York]. They had been married 28 years with no children. He was a patent lawyer. He immigrated to the United States in 1872.2 Adolph's wife, Elizabeth, died on 21 October 1912 in Citronelle Village leaving him a widower. On 8 May 1914, Adolph married Carrie B. Hill in Mobile Alabama. January 1920, Adolph was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Citronelle Village at State Street. Enumerated in this household were Adolph Barthel [75 Barvaria [French]] & his wife: Carrie B. [49 Louisanna]. They owned their home. He was a patent attorney.3 11 April 1930, Adolph was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Citronelle Village. Enumerated in this household were Adolph Barthel [86 Germany] & his wife: Carrie B. [58 Louisanna].4 Adolph died on Monday, 29 June 1931 in Detroit at age 86 years, 9 months and 12 days of Myocarditis.5 He was buried there in Detroit in Woodmere Cemetery.
