     Joseph was born on Tuesday, 13 March 1656/57 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Joseph married Patience Holbrook, daughter of Richard Holbrook and Agnes (?), in June 1678 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. He and Patience were blessed with 8 children. Sometime after the marriage of Joseph & Patience, they removed to Newark, New Jersey. Joseph apparently, could not write since he signed his name with an "X". Joseph married Dorcas (?) after 1699. Joseph made his will on 21 June 1726 at Newark, Sussex County, New Jersey.

In the name of God Amen, the twenty first day of June year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred Twenty Six I Joseph Wheeler of Newark in the County of Essex & Province of New Jersey Yeoman being very sick and weak in Body but of Perfect mind & memory thanks be given unto God therefore Calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye to make this my last will and testament That is to say Principally & first of all I give & Recommend my soul into the hands of god that gave it and for my Body I recommend to the earth to be Buried in a Christian & Decent manner at the Discression of my Executors Nothing Doubting but at Generall Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this Life I give Devise & bequeath of the same in the following manner & form, Imprimis I give & bequeath unto my wife Dorcas Wheeler the sum of forty shillings in bills or current money of Connecticut Item I give devise and bequeath unto eldest son Joseph Wheeler four hundres pounds in bills of creditt or current money of Connecticut aforesaid together with all my last purchase division of lands in bounds of Milford as yett undivided & also my right in the commonage in Milford & sequestered land and also my right of lands in Notting Town in the Naraganst together with all my right of lands at Port Royall Together with all my lands & moveables in Newark the same to be and remain to his his heirs and assagns forever, Item, I give to my son Justice Wheeler the sum of twenty shillings in the mentioned currency to be paid within two years after my decease together with all my husbandry tools that with what he hath had before is his share; Item, I give unto my son Obadiah Wheeler the sum of twenty shillings to be paid within two years of my decease in the above curremcy that with what he has had before is his part of the inheritance, Item I give unto my daughter Patience Burnet the sum of fifty shillings in the above said currency to be paid within two years after my decease, I give unto my daughter Keziah Beardeslie the sum of twenty shillings to be paid within two years of my said decease in the above said currency Item I give unto my son-in-law Samuel Farrand the sum of twenty shillings to be paid within two years after decease in the above said currency. Item all the remaining part of my moveable estate not before disposed of after just debts & funerall charges be paid & discharged, I give & bequeath unto my said son Joseph Wheeler whom I also appoint & consitute sole executor of this my last will & testament. I do hereby utterly revoke disanull & make void all & any other will or wills heretofore made & executor & executors by me heretofore ordained or made ratifying allowing & holding for form & natural declared this & no other my last will & testament I witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & year above written Joseph Wheeler [New Jersey Wills: Liber B, page 71].

Joseph departed this life on Wednesday, 26 June 1726 in Newark, Sussex County, New Jersey. His will was probated on 15 September 1727.
