Isaiah was born on Thursday, 27 September 1731 in either the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, or or possibly in Orange County, depending on exactly when his family moved to Orange County. In 1734, Isaiah moved from Southold to Orange County, New York with his parents. He was a captain in the American Revolutionary War in the Second Regiment of the Ulster County Militia under Col. James McClaghry. Isaiah married Abigail Meeker, daughter of Benjamin Meeker, in 1751 in New York. The 1800 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Isaiah Vail [111110:01010].2 Isaiah made his will on 31 May 1806 at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York.
In the name of God Amen I Isaiah Vail of the Town of Wallkill County of Orange and State of New York considering the uncertainty of this mortal life being in an advanced age but of sound disposing mind and memory thanks be to God for his mercy’s I do proceed to make this my last will and testament hearby revoking and disannulling all and every will and wills by me heretofore made declaring this to be my last – viz I give and bequeath to my wife Abigail Vail one bed and bedding two cows and four sheep two chests and six chairs and the black girl Meree during her life at her decease the black girl is to be sold by the Executors and the money divided equal between Phebe Smith Irene Mapes and Abigail Mills. I likewise give unto my wife Abigail Eighty pounds and her choise of two rooms out of the three in my end of the house for her accommodation I give unto my son Samuel Vail thirty pounds and I give unto my granddaughter Abigail Carpenter Sixty pounds including what she has received as part of the Sum. I give unto my daughter Mary Dolson five dollars and I give and bequeath unto my son George Washington Vail all the farm on which I now live to him his heirs and assigns forever and it is my will that he the said George Washington Vail shall provide for the comfortable maintain his mother during her life if she chooses to live with him I do further direct George Washington Vail at the Expiration of one year after my decease pay unto his three sisters Phebe Smith Irene Mapes and Abigail Mills to each of person the sum of Sixty six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence to be free of interest I further direct that my Executors at the Expiration of one year after my decease pay unto my last named three daughters the sum of thirty three pounds six shillings and eight pence free from interest to each person the above sum I give unto my son George Washington Vail my wagon pleasure Sleight and wheat mill I further Direct that my son George Washington Vail pay to my Executors the sum of Three hundred Pounds in the manner following that is at the Expiration of one year after my decease to pay seventy five pounds and so to continue to pay annually to pay seventy five pounds a year until the whole is paid to be free of interest of all the payments – I direct that this last mentioned three hundred pounds be considered as part of my moveable property and I do direct my Executors us soon as convenient after my decease to make Sale of my personal property not already conveyed in this will and depose of it in the following manner that is the money remaining in their hands after paying the legacies above mentioned in this will I direct to be divided unto six equal shares that is to my son’s Obadiah Vail Josiah Vail Isaiah Vail John Vail and Samuel Vail to each an equal share and my grandsons John Smith and Joseph Smith one share divided equal between them this bequest may be collected and paid in one year after my decease except the three last payments from George and then when they come due free from Interest – One third of the Grain in the ground and in the Barn at the time of my decease I consider as part of my personal estate and direct it to be included therewith by my Executors and I nominate constitute and appoint my sons Josiah Vail and Isaiah Vail my Executors investing them with full power to execute this my last will and teatament in Witness whereof I have set my hand and this thirty first day of May in the year Eighteen hundred and six – Signed Sealed Acknowledged & published and declared by the testator to be his last will and testament in presence of us John Thompson Mary Baily and Oliver Bayley - - Signed Isaiah Vail.3
Isaiah departed this life on Monday, 1 January 1810 in the Town of Wallkill at age 78 years, 3 months and 5 days. He was buried at Middletown, Orange County, New York, in Hillside Cemetery. In Memory of Isaiah Vail who departed this life on the first day of January 1810 aged 78 years 3 months and 5 days.4 His will was probated on 5 January 1810.

When Isaiah Vail was three years old his father removed from Southold to Orange County, N. Y. This was in the year 1734. When the Revolutionary War opened he took the side of the Colonies and served with the rank of captain in the Second Regiment, Ulster County Militia, Col. James McClaghry.2 He was present at the capture of Fort Montgomery. His will dated May 31, 1806, probated January 5, 1810, mentions his wife Abigail; daughters Phebe Smith, Irena Mapes, Abigail Mills and Mary Dolsen ; one granddaughter, Abigail Carpenter; six sons, George Washington, Obadiah, Josiah, Isaiah, John and Samuel; and two grandsons, John and Henry Smith. His widow Abigail made a will April 20, 1810, which was probated March 16, 1814, mentioning her "two youngest daughters," Irena Mapes and Abigail Mills, Sarah Smith. Abigail Smith, her daughter Mary Dolsen, her son John, her granddaughters Abigail Carpenter and Abigail Smith.
