     William was born on Saturday, 27 June 1761 in Hamptonburg Township, Orange County, New York. He served in the 3rd Regiment of the Orange County Militia during the Revoluntionary War as did his father. He lived at Hamptonburg, Orange County.ange Co., N. Y.2,3 William married Ruth Mapes on 10 October 1785 in Orange County, New York, by by Mr. Lewis. He was a general merchant & postmaster in Highland Mills, Orange County, New York. William made his will on 30 September 1835 at Goshen Precinct, Orange County, New York. He named his wife, Ruth, his living children & many grandchildren.4 William departed this life on Friday, 27 July 1838 in Orange County, New York. His will was probated on 10 November 1838 at Goshen Precinct, Orange County, New York.

    William Vail, Jr., and his father were both in the Third Regiment, Orange County Militia, in the Revolutionary service, and obtained Land Bounty rights. Both were early signers of the pledge to sustain Congress in its action. He lived at Hamptonburg. Children:

[S464] Henry Hobart Vail, Genealogy of some of the Vail family descended from Jeremiah Vail at Salem, Mass., 1639, page 108 - On the roll of pensioners for services in the Revolution, dated November 28, 1833, the name of William Vail of Orange Co., N. Y., appears. He was then seventy-two years of age, and had received sixty dollars, at the rate of twenty-fourdollars a year. His service was in the Massachusetts Militia.
