     Jeremiah was born circa 1618 in England. Jeremiah married Catharine (?) circa 1643 in England. Jeremiah was a strong, industrious, prudent, God-fearing man. He was diligent and careful in his business, capable of strong friendship, not quarrelsome or litigious. In no case is he recorded in taking a personal part in civil or religious strife. He appears of record at Easthampton as "Goodman Vaile" and he seems to have honored that title. There is ample evidence that his immediate descendants honor his name, as in the five succeeding generations the eldestson was named "Jeremiah". Jeremiah & Catherine were at Salem as early as 1639. On 6 April 1645, Catherine was admitted to the First Church of Salem. He was a blacksmith there. He sold his land in 1651 & took a position on the farm of Lt. Lion Gardiner of Gardiner's Island. On 12 February 1655, Southampton gave him a lot where his family lived until 1659. By March 1659, he had sold his home & removed to Southold, Long Island. His wife Catherine died just prior or after this event. He got married to Mary Folger & lived on a lot that had been owned by Mary's first husband, Peter Payne. In 1685, Jeremiah signed a deed with his wife Joyce and his son John & his wife Grace. In the census of 1686, his family consisted of four males & 2 females. He was a blacksmith. Jeremiah married 2nd Mary Folger, daughter of John Folger and Merribah Gibbs, on 24 May 1660 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Jeremiah married 3rd Joyce (?) before 1685 in New York. Jeremiah's wife, Mary, died on 18 July 1685 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, leaving him a widower. Jeremiah made his will on 4 December 1685 at the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. He leaves home & land to son John, leaves third to wife Joyce during her life, land Jerimiah Foster. land to son Daniel & land to friend & neighbor Thomas Tuston. Jeremiah departed this life before 19 October 1687 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. His will was probated on 19 October 1687.

  2. [S344] Josephine C Frost, Ancestors of James Wickham and his Wife Cora Prudence Billard, page 130 - 1. JEREMIAH VAIL is first noted in New England, when he was a witness in a court held in Salem, Mass., July 24, 1639 ; he was a proprietor in 1647 and purchased land in 1648, which he sold in 1651 and "removed out of the jurisdiction." He was a blacksmith, and on June 17, 1651, the town of Southampton, L. I., granted a one hundred pound lot to "Jeremy Veale, blacksmith of Salem, provided he do come and settle here before January next and that to his power be in readiness doe all the blacksmith work that the inhabitants doe stand in need of." He did not accept the offer but with Anthony Waters took charge of the farm of Lieutenant Lion Gardiner on his Island. On February 12, 1655, the town of Easthampton gave him a lot, which he would have when his time had expired with Gardiner. This lot is opposite the Presbyterian church and here he lived until 1.659 when on March 24 of that year he sold that property and removed to South-old, L. I., where he died in 1687.
    He married first, Catherine, whose maiden name is not known, and who died before May 24, 1660, for on that day he married the widow, Mary (Folger) Payne, and before 1685 he married Joyce, maiden name not known, but who survived him.
