     Sylvanus was born circa 1724 probably at the Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Long Island, New York. Sylvanus married Abigail Buckbee in New York. Sylvanus made his will on 21 August 1799. He does not name a wife, she probably predeceased him. He mentions his daughter Esther, still unmarried & his sons: William, land in North Salem; Sylvanus, Jr., land in North Salem and Bedford: James, land in Worth Salem. Samuel and Justus, the last two to have the remainder of the estate. Executors: Sylvanus Jr., Justus and William Townsend. Witnesses: Samuel Barnum, Clarissa Barnum and James Dickinson. Sylvanus departed this life in Westchester County, New York. His will was probated on 13 January 1806 at Westchester County, New York.

Townsend neglected to name the 12 children of Sylvanus and Abigail Townsend except to state that there were 12, naming only their son William from whom the Rev. Thomas R. Townsend descended. Scattered records indicate that Sylvanus (Silvanus) Townsend lived at North Salem, Westchester County. N.Y. He was in the area and married by the 14th of the 2nd month, 1754, when his son, Silvanus Junior's birth was recorded by the Amawalk Friends Meeting. In 1786, the Salem Overseers of the Poor gave Silvanus cash to support one Samuel Hemingway and his wife. In 1788, William Townsend, son of Sylvanus, and Jeremiah Keeler were compensated for the same purpose. (NYSDAR Cem. Records 248; 84-5).On the 1790 census Sylvanus Townsend, Sr. is recorded at North Salem (323) next to his sons William, Sylvanus, Jr. and James. On the 21st of August, 1799, Sylvanus made his will and it was probated 13 January, 1806. (NYGBR 57:323). Sylvanus does not name a wife, probably predeceased. Daughter Esther, still unmarried. Sons: William, land in North Salem; Sylvanus, Jr., land in North Salem and Bedford: James, land in Worth Salem. Samuel and Justus, the last two to have the remainder of the estate.
