He is a carpenter.² 7 August 1860, John and his wife, Sophia, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Berkshire. Enumerated in this household were John Torrey [65 New York], Sophia [63 Massachusetts] & B B [56 New York]. John is a carpenter and B B is a tailoress.³ 21 June 1870, John and his wife, Sophia, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Berkshire. Enumerated in this household were John Torrey [75 New York], Sophia [72 Massachusetts] & Betsy [65 New York]. John was a cabinet maker.⁴ John's wife, Sophia, died in March 1875 in Berkshire leaving him a widower. 11 June 1880, John was listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Berkshire. Enumerated in this household were Lucious M. Bennett [49 New York], Mary A. [41 New York]. Jennie S. [11 New York] Fred R. [7 New York], Boarder: John Torrey [85 Rhode Island] & Bestsy Torrey [75 New York]. Lucious is a laborer, John a retired carpenter, listed with a general disability, and Bestsy is a housekeeper.⁵ John departed this life on Friday, 27 August 1880 in Berkshire at age 85 years, 8 months and 16 days. He was buried there in the Evergreen Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: John Torrey - BORN Dec 11 1794 - DIED [the rest is buried].⁶
