James was born circa 1614 in Combe St. Nicholas, Somersetshire, England. James married Ann Hatch on 2 November 1643 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 James & Ann had children: Deacon James [9/01/1644][m Lydia Willis, 2nd Elizabeth Rollins, 3rd Eunice], William [3/15/1646], Joseph [3/18/1648/9], Demaris [10/25/1651], Mary [6/07/1654], Jonathan [6/07/1654-6/17/1718][m. circa 1674 Ruth Fry], Reverand Josiah [1/28/1658], Sarah [2/09/1660/1][m. Richard Warren & 2nd 9/18/1712 Thomas Ewer], Joanna [1663] & Bethia [1665].3,4 He was a clothier, and built a clothing mill in Situate. On 5 July 1665 James was asked by the Governor of Plymouth Colony to check on the powder, as Dutch soldiers were advancing on them. The gun powder was stored at the Tickner home. While he was laying out the powder to dry, all of the powder ignited and blew the house apart. Mrs. Tickner and her child were burned badly and both died within 10 or 11 hours after the explosion. James was also very badly burned, but lived until the next day.5,6 James departed this life on Monday, 6 July 1665 in Scituate.7,8

He was killed by an accidental dischatrge of a cannon July 1665 when only 48 yrs. Old. Two of his children were adopted by their uncle William of Weymouth, Johnathan and Mary, twins.
