David was born in 1740 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. He was the son of David H Terry and Mehitable Aldrich. He gave his age as 38 when he signed the Oath of Allegiance and Peaceable Behaviour required by Governor William Tryon in 1778.2 David married Joanna Howell, daughter of Captain Richard Howell and Elizabeth Tuthill, on 30 October 1760 in Aquabogue in the Town of Southold.3 David and Joanna had children: child [1761], Joanna [1762-1809] [m. 1782 William Zadock Wellman], Gershom [1764-10/31/1840], child [1766], child [1768], Mary [1770-9/22/1839], Parshall [1774-1850] [m. 1799 Zady Goodrich], Elizabeth [1778-1870] [m. 2/12/1794 Jesse Moon], David [12/17/1783-1856]. David departed this life on Monday, 31 October 1814 in Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, at age 74 years. He was buried at Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, in Sugar Hill Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: In memory of David Terry who died Oct 31st 1814 in the 74th year of his age.
