John Catlin Stedman

     John Catlin was born on Thursday, 23 January 1806 in Windham Township, Greene County, New York. John married Julia Ann Slosson circa 1828 in Tioga County, New York. John & Julia had children: Susan Rebecca [3/02/1829], Sylvia Maria [10/25/1830], Enos Slosson [3/20/1834], Ulysses [4/11/1836], & John Obadiah [1/17/1838]. In 1844, John came to Michigan with his wife Julia and five children from New York to settle on section 14 in Unidalla, Livingston County. In 1846, he returned to New York for his parents. He was a supervisor in Unidalla in 1852 & 1853. His nephew, W. S. Livermore came from Richfield, Tioga County with the family in 1844. 9 August 1850, John and his wife, Julia, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were John C. Stedman [44 New York], his wife: Julia [44 New York], children: Susan [21 New York], Maria [18 New York], Enos [16 New York], Ulysses [14 New York], & John [12 New York].³ 6 June 1860, John and his wife, Julia, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were J. C. Stedman [56 New York], Julie Ann [52 New York], Enos I. [26 New York student at law], Arlysis [24 New York], John C. [22 New York] & John Steadman [85 Connecticut]. [Note - Next on the census was Silas Hemeingway and next on the list was May Watson - KLM]⁴ John's wife, Julia, died on 1 August 1866 in Unadilla Township leaving him a widower. John married 2nd Fannie Durkee on 20 February 1869. 10 August 1870, John and his wife, Fannie, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were John C. Steadman [63 New York], Fannie [36 New York], John O [30 New York] & Belle Furgeson 17 Micxhigan]. John is farming on land that is valued at $5000 and has personal prooerty valued at $2000.⁵ 1 June 1880, John and his wife, Fannie, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township. Enumerated in this household were John Stedman [73 New York], Fannie [45 New York], John O. [42 New York] & Belle Furgeson [27 New York], John Sr is a farmer, his son John is teaching school and Belle is teaching music.⁶ John departed this life on Monday, 21 October 1889 in Unadilla Township at age 83 years, 8 months and 28 days. He died from jaundice.⁷ He was buried there in the Baseline Cemetery.⁸
