James Valentine was born on Sunday, 31 March 1799 in Manhattan, New York County, New York, at the family home at 90 Beekman Street. James married Maria Bogart Wright, daughter of Augustus Wright and Katharine Uyt ten Bogaert [second], on 17 March 1824 in New York City at the home of William H. Leggett in the Rue Street. James' sister, Eliza and Augustus W., son of William H, Leggett, both small children witnessed the ceremony. Many years later, these two children married. James ran a book store on Pearl Street. He later built the Peales Musuem on Broadway opposite the park.2 25 July 1850, James and his wife, Maria, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in the City, County & State of New York. Enumerated in this household were James Seaman [50 New York-Gentleman], his wife: Maria [50 New York], children: Sarah [24 New York], Margaret [22 New York], Mary Ann [20 New York], James [16 New York], Catherine [14 New York], & servants: Mary Bailey [23 Ireland], & Barbara Magari [19 New York].3 James departed this life on Sunday, 1 March 1857 in Harlem, Westchester County, New York, at age 57 years, 11 months and 1 day.4 He was buried at Westchester, Westchester County, New York, in the Ferris Burying Ground.5
