Mary Root

     Mary was born on Friday, 10 April 1761 in Plainville [Farmington Plains], Hartford County, Connecticut. She was the daughter of John Root & Silence Orvis. Mary married Josiah Hotchkiss, son of Ladwick Hotchkiss and Mary North, on 22 February 1781. Josiah and Mary had children: Oliver 8/20/1783-11/27/1868] [m. Rebecca Sturdevant] & Jeremiah [1787-8/21/1834]. Mary departed this life on Thursday, 27 November 1823 in Plainville [Farmington Plains] at age 62 years, 7 months and 17 days. She was buried there in Old East Street Burying Ground. The insecription on her tombstone reads: In memory of Mary Hotchkiss wife of Josiah Hotchkiss who died Nov. 27, 1823 aged 63 years.¹
