Rene Aure dit Grandmont

     Rene was born in 1631 in d'Axay-le-Rideau, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France. On 30 April 1653, he left Saint-Nazaire with 16 other men for Quebec. He was listed as a "Defricheur".¹ A contract for the marriage of Rene Aure dit Grandmont & Denise Damanee was signed on 26 October 1665. It was drawn up by notary, Mr. Latouche. It noted he was originally from d'Axay-le-Rideau, Providence-de-Tours and his parents as Jacques Houray & Marguerite Casillion. It noted she originated from St-Jean-en-Greve, Paris and her parents as Michel Damesi & Catherine Taureau.² 1666, Rene and Denise were listed on the Canadian Census in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Rene Houray [36 years] & Denise Damance [25 years].³ 1667, Rene and Denise were listed on the Canadian Census in Comte-de-Champlain, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Rene Haure [35 years] & Denise Esmery [25 years].⁴ 1681, Rene and Denise were listed on the Canadian Census in Champlain. Enumerated in this household were Rene Oure [50 years], Denise Damanee [50 years], Rene [14 years], Denise [8 years], Catherine [6 years], Jean [4 years] & Joseph [1 year].⁵ Rene's wife, Denise, died circa 22 September 1704 in Champlain leaving him a widower. Rene departed this life on Friday, 11 June 1706 in Champlain at age 75 years. He was buried there in the churchyard of la Visitation on Saturday, 12 June 1706.⁶
