Matthew was born on Thursday, 30 April 1570 in Bath, Somersetshire, England. Matthew married Agnes Cullen, daughter of William Cullen and Joane Millard, on 16 April 1596 in Bath at the Abbey Church of SS. Peter and Paul.1 Matthew was Mayor of Bath in 1627. Matthew's wife, Agnes, died before 19 February 1628 in Bath, leaving him a widower. Matthew married 2nd Elizabeth Moorefield on 13 August 1635 in Bath at the Abbey Church of SS. Peter and Paul.2 The church records noted him as one of the aldermen of the town. Matthew made his will on 21 January 1640/41.
To the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Bath. 5 marks (4p. 3.4d.); To the Poor of Bath. 5 marks (4p. 3.4d.); To son, Robert; furniture; to his wife, Jane: clothing, to daughter, Anne, 3s. and son, John: silver tankard; To son, Matthew: 10. Matthew departed this life in Bath. He was buried there in the Abbey Churchyard of SS. Peter & Paul on Saturday, 23 February 1640/41. The church records noted him as one of the aldermen of the town.4 His will was probated on 1 May 1641 by his son, John.
