Joseph was born on Wednesday, 17 July 1720 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. He was christened there on 5 July 1724 in the 1st Congregational Church. Joseph married Mary Bartlett on 27 December 1752 in Stonington. The family removed from Stonington to Dutchess County, New York about 1753 and by 1754,had settled in Orange County, New York. The family was a member of the United Empire Loyalist who fled from New York to Shelbourne, Nova Scotia, Canada in the spring of 1783 and settled there. Joseph departed this life circa 1810 in Shelbourne.

Joseph Randall, the ancestor of the Canadian branch of this family, was born in Stonington, Connecticut, 25 February, 1713. His wife [no data of maiden name] was born in Brookfield, Mass., 12 Sept., 1729. They were married 27 Dec., 1752 and lived thereafter in the Providence of New York. Children: Joseph b. in Dutchess County, New York, 22 Dec. 1753; Mary, b. Orange County, New York, 7 Sept. 1755; Goodeth b. Orange County, New York, 18 April 1757; Amos b.
