Nicholas was born in 1536 in Sanderstead Court, County Surrey, England. Nicholas had the position of Assistant Sergeant of the Queen’s Carriages, after the second year of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Nicholas married Olive Harmon on 30 January 1569 in Westminister, London, County Middlesex, England, at St. Martin's-in-the-Field.2 Nicholas departed this life on Saturday, 10 May 1586 in Sanderstead Court at age 50 years. He was buried there in All Saints Church or Chancel. On a Brass plate originally hung in the Sanderstead Church [Allsaints Church] is the following inscription: "Here lyeth Nycholas Wood, the third son of John At Wood of Sanderstead Corte, who served Queene Elizabeth sens the second yeare of her rayne, and deceased the 14 of May,1586, leaving behind him a wyfe and children, — 7 sons, Harman, John. Nicholas, Thomas, James, John, Richard, Allis, Susan." The plate is now stored in the parish chest.3,4

- [S1257] Elijah Francis Atwood, Ye Atte Wode Annuals, Part 1, page 3 - It is likely that John Hewson Atwood became keeper of the King’s Falcons, John Ownstead was Sergeant of he Queen’s Carriages, under Elizabeth…. John Hewson settled certain Sanderstead Manor lands on his youngest son Thomas, who died in 1569; Robert Atwood died in 1568. John Hewson Wood died in St. martin’s 1562, while Margaret had died in 1558. A Chancery suit includes statement that Court Roll in 1547 show Nicholas Atwood to have then been the heir of Sanderstead Manor.
Page 5 - Nicholas Atwood, or Wood, was borne before 1539, hence probably at Sanderstead Court. His brass relates that he served Queen Elizabeth after the second year of her reign.
