James was born in 1631 in Devonshire, England. James married Susannah Armitage, daughter of Thomas Armitage and Susannah Mitchell, in 1652 in Town of Hempstead, Long Island, New Netherlands. James made his will on 1 January 1685 at Hempstead Town, Queens County, Long Island, New York.
He states his eldest son, John, to have the field adj. his lot called Folsum, 22 acres from the town, meadows on Reyner's Neck, my longest gun, and Mr. Hooker's works. HIs sons: James & Nathaniel to have the meadow on Strickland's Neck where we winter our cattle, other lots & goods, my middle gun, & Heilin's book on geography, also the home lot in the great town street where I now dwell. To his sons Jonathan & Samuel lots at Haybridge & Madnan's Necks, & a hundred acres in the north woods. His son Nathaniel to have the loom wherein he weaveth, my small gun, & Mr. Cole's books. Two youngest sons, William & Benjamin, to have fifty acres in the south woods, & meadows at Rockaway. He bequests to daughters: Lea & Sarah, to children of my daughter Susan, & to Mary, daughter of my son John. To my daughter Agnes, Mr. Bilfield's works & the ecclesiastical history in English. Residue divided among my eleven children. My sons: John & James exectuors. Overseers: my cousin John Smith & neighbor John Smith (Rock). Witnesses: Jeremiah Hobart & Edward Spragg, Sr.3

- [S119] Herbert Furman Seversmith, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York & Connecticut, pages 113-157 "Armitage Family"; page 121 - notes will of James Pine dated 1 January 1685 & proved 12 October 1686 & indicates all eleven children all living but does not name wife & mentions children of daughter Susan & Mary of son John.; page 122 - speakes of will of Richard Ellison probated 13 June 1683 in which he makes mention of James Pine to Joshua Jacock ten acres "in liew of cow James Pine left for his wife, which cow is long since dead." He notes Mr. Jacock married Sarah Ellison, his daughter who was born 4 June 1652 at Braintree, Massachusetts. She would have been a minor at the administration of James Pine's will for the cow to be in possession of her father. This would place James' death in 1669 or before.
