Joseph Phelps Jr.

     Joseph was born on Sunday, 9 October 1689 in Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was tthe son of Joseph Phelps and Hannah Newton. Joseph married Rebecca North, daughter of Thomas North and Hannah Newell, on 27 January 1713 in Hartford County, Connecticut. Joseph & Rebecca had children: Hannah [5/28/1714-6/03/1714], Joseph [10/18/1716-5/14/1775][m. 1740 Deborah Harris], Hannah [6/07/1718-4/17/1790][m. 4/28 1736 Abel Forward], Elijah 5/11/`1720-4/14/1795] [m. Esther Kent], Ezekial [3/08/1723-10/04/1781][m. 1744 Elizabeth Gillette], Rebecca [1/22/1724-3/02/1761][m. 1744 Joel Harmon], Elizabeth [11/27/1726-10/17/1783][m. 1745 Moses Holcolm], Lydia [9/10/1728][m. Jacob Gillette], Abel [5/22/1730-1/05/1805][m. 4/02/1752 Mary Eno], Hezekia [11/18/1732-11/07/1793][m. Hannah Hayden] & Keziah [11/18/1732][m. James Harmon]. Joseph's wife, Rebecca, died on 18 November 1732 in East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut, leaving him a widower. On 23 April 1735, he married second, Hannah Clark in Simsbury. Joseph departed this life on Saturday, 18 June 1763 in East Granby at age 73 years, 8 months and 9 days. He was buried there in East Granby Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Here lyeth interred ye body of Mr.Joseph Phelps who died ye June 18th 1763 in ye 74th year of his age.¹
