Samuel was born on Friday, 21 September 1810 in Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Samuel married Violet Hinebaugh on 19 November 1833 in Crawford County, Ohio.1 Samuel and Violet had one daughter: Mary Ann [12/27/1834-11/15/1838] & raised from birth, Caroline [9/271844-7/25/1916][m. 1/03/1865 Jacob Bash] daughter of Joseph Winterhalter, since her mother having probalby died in childbirth. Samuel attended school until sixteen and assisted his father on the farm. He moved to Ohio in October 1827 with his parents. After 5 years, Samuel left his father's farm and for 25 years engaged in hauling goods to Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Columbus & Sandusky. With the introduction of the railroad, he ran a livery stable at the southeast corner of Walnut & Mary. Sometime later he resided in Holmes Twp. where he farmed for some twenty-five years before removing to Fort Recovery. 17 September 1850, Samuel and his wife, Violet, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Bucyrus Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [39 Pennsylvania laborer $800], his wife, Violet [39 Pennsylvania], & Caroline [6 Ohio].2 1 June 1860, Samuel and his wife, Violet, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [49 Pennsylvania], his wife, Violet [49 Pennsylvania], and Caroline Winterhalter [16 Ohio].3 23 July 1870, Samuel and his wife, Violet, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [59 Pennsylvania], Violet [59 Pennsylvania] & Wilson Watson [10 Ohio]. Samuel is a farmer; the couple has a farm valued at $4800 and personal property at $400.4 7 June 1880, Samuel and his wife, Violet, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [69 Pensylvania] & Violet [69 Pennsylvania]. They are farming.5 Samuel departed this life on Thursday, 7 January 1892 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio, at age 81 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was buried at Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, in Mount Zion Cemetery. Noble County, Indiana is adjacent to Mercer County in Ohio. Fort Recovert is about 2 miles from the state line. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Samuel Peterman - Died Jan. 7 1892 - Aged 81 y 3 m 16 d.6
