Margaret was born circa 1607 in Winstanley in the parish of Wigan, Lancastershire, England. Margaret made her will on 26 April 1679.
In the name of God amen I Margaret Atherton of Wigan in ye County of Lancaster spinster being I praise God in my perfect health & memory, praised be God for it, doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner following. First and principally I commit my soul into ye hands of Almighty God my only Creator & Maker hoping through the mercies of Jesus Christ to be saved & made yet subject of everlasting life, my body to be buried at the discretion of my Executors, as for my personal estate I doe dispose of as followeth.
First, my debts and funeral expenses to be payed out of the estate & then I give unto ye poor of Wigan sixty shillings & my mind & will is that Elenor Hugh & her children have five shillings out of the amount I give to ye poor of Wigan.
I do give unto Joshua Barton ye son of Joshua Barton Minister & my nephew; I mean the son of Joshua Barton twenty pound.
Also, I give to John Barton ye son of ye said Joshua Barton Minister thirty pound.
Also, I do give Norton Barton third son of ye said Joshua Barton twenty pound.
It is my will & mind that both Joshua Barton & John Barton & Norton Barton monies be put out by my Executors & Overseers to ye best return for ye said Joshua and John and Norton’s good until they come of age as one and twenty years, or it be so any or there great good to have some while they are with their Mother or Gran-mother. If it shall please God to take away by death either Joshua Barton or Norton Barton, then John Barton shall have every pound of his deceased brothers. Or is should please God to take away John second son of ye said Joshua Barton Minister then it is mind & will that ye said John Barton’s thirty pound goe to his brothers Joshua Barton and Norton Barton equally between them, & if one die & one live, It is my mind & will that he that liveth shall have all, but if it please to take them all away by death it is my mind & will that all that I gave them go to their Father Joshua Barton if he be living. And if their Father be dead then it is my mind & will that both Joshua Barton & John Barton & Norton Barton’s money and what is made shall be given to Mary Barton late wife of John Barton & Elizabeth Tarbock & Thomas Latham’s children to be equally divided among them.
I do give to Elizabeth Tarbock .... shilling.
I do give to Mary Jones ye wife of Henry Jones ten pound which her husband having borroweth of me.
I do give unto Catherine Ford ye wife of William Ford ...... my black serge coat and my white Picher
The remainder of my estate I do give to Joshua Barton my nephew Minister both goods, monies, bills, bonds or anything that is mine except my wearing clothes or linen or it may be some small legacies I shall make here on this side or the other side or any papers pined or secured to this my attached Will.
So, it be written with my own hand or any other so that my name be write with my own hand. Viz ye Executors have after named twenty shillings apiece, twenty shillings to preach my funeral sacrament.
