Torrey, daughter of Seth Baldwin Torrey and Elizabeth Stedman, on 4 July 1856 at Dexter Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan.1 John & Eleanor had children: Emma Lazelle [5/08/1857-5/28/1925][m. Peter Anton Auer], Marion D. [1862J, John Wilber [3/22/1864-12/04/1923][m. Anna F.], Zera David [2/15/1867-12/19/1933][m. 8/19/1889 Mabel Fasquella Horton], Bertha [8/__1868]m. 1892 George Appleyard. 12 June 1860, John and his wife, Eleanor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Ovid, Clinton County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were John Q, Patterson [34 New York], Ellanor [19 New York] & Emma [3 Michigan]. He was a drover.2 John served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in Company I, 27th Michigan Infantry. 13 July 1870, John and his wife, Eleanor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Ovid. Enumerated in this household were John Q. Patterson [41 New York], Esther S [30 New York], Emma L. [13 Michigan], Marion D. [8 Michigan], John W. [6 Michigan], Zera D. [4 Michigan], Bertha [1 Michigan] & a boarder: Frank G. Rounsvill [22 Michigan]. John is a lawyer & Frank is a Life Insurance Agent.3 18 June 1880, John and his wife, Eleanor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Reed City, Osceola County, Michigan, on Todd Avenue. Enumerated in this household were John Q. Patterson [52 New York], Eleanor E [46 New York], Wilber [16 Michigan], Zera [14 Michigan], Dellette Esler [18 Michigan], Bertha Pattersom [12 Michigan] & a servant Maggie Mitchell [19 Canada]. John is listed as a lawyer.4 20 June 1900, John and his wife, Eleanor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were John Q. Patterson [73 New York - August 1826] & Eleanor [60 New York - December 1839], Boarders: George Appleyard [38 New York], Bertha Appleyard [31 Michigan] & a servant: Jennie Brower [17 Michigan]. John & Eleanor had been married 43 years having had 5 children all living. George and Bertha had been married 8 years. John was listed as a lawyer, and George was an Architect. They were renting their home.5 John departed this life on Wednesday, 14 June 1905 in Grand Rapids at age 77 years, 9 months and 19 days.

Obituary: David H. Patterson received word of the death of John Q. Patterson, at Grand Rapids on Wed. Died from smallpox. He was 77 and a Civil War Vet. - Hudson Post, Lenawee County, Michigan, July 16, 1905.6

He was buried there in Oakhill Cemetery.
