James was born circa 1549 in Great Waltham, County Essex, England.3 James married Jane Bristow on 12 August 1576 in Great Leighs, County Essex, England, at St. Mary the Virgin Church.4 James made his will on 20 May 1592.
The Will of James Hampstead of Much Leighs, County Essex, yeoman: To Thomas Hampstead, my oldest son, land, etc., in Braintree Manor, called Lowes pasture, containing 16 acres and a rod Calves Croft, 3 acres, a meadow called Alms House, etc. To Richard my second son Tenements called Fords and Marshalls and 26 acres of land in my occupation and that of John Allen joyner. To James Hampstead, my third son, land called Brooms Croft, in the tenure of one Huckerbye and other landholders of the same manner. To Nicolas my fourth son a free tenement called Beeves als Bells in the parish of Braintree. To John my fifth son a messuage called Mair and a house in Halfieldwick in Terling. To my daughter Mabel £40. To my daughter Elizabeth £40 when 21or married. Wife, Jane appointed executrix. – Witnesses: Thomas Hubbard, Richard Hyde, Robert Turner & Thomas Tannack.5
James departed this life in Great Leighs. He was buried there in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin on Saturday, 2 December 1595.6 His will was probated on 8 January 1595/96.
