William was born circa 1600 in England. William married Abigail Graves circa 1632 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.3 On this date he is found on a list of freeman in the town of Lynn, Massachusetts Bay. In 1637, he was one of the founders of Hartford. My 1643, he was a master teacher there in Harford. In 1636, the family removed to what is now Hartford, Connecticut where he was one of the founders of the settlement along with Francis Andrews Thomas Spencer, William Andrews and others. In 1658, he was described as "senex" by Winthrop in his journal. When Winthrop used this term, he was referring to men atleast near seventy years of age.4 William made his will on 1 April 1659 at Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.
I William Andrews, being sick and weak, but of perfect memory, do in this my last Will & Testament give and bequeath to Abigail, my wife, my house, barn and home lot as it is enclosed between my son Edward Grannis and me, also, I do give & bequeath to Abigail, my wife, all my meadow & swamp Land lying in the South Meadow and that lieth in the place called Hockanum, and all my upland Ground elsewhere, during the time of her natural life; also I give to the said Abigail 2 cowes, one yearling calf; also I give to Abigail, my wife, four yards of Kersey with 3 dozen of Buttons and silke, and all other of my Moveable Goods, during the time that she liveth unmarried. If she marry [again], then my will is, that such of the Moveables as she can conveniently spare shall be disposed of among our children as she seeth meet, with the advice of the Overseers. My will is, to give to my son John one working steer; also that Abigail, my wife, shall dispose of my land, meadow, swamp Housing and Homelott among our children, to every one of them some, as she shall think fit with the advice and consent of the Overseers. I do make Abigail, my wife, Executrix, and I do Intreat my friend Edward Stebbings and my brother George Grave to assist and to see this my will performed. Witnesses: Edward Stebbing George Grave.5,4
William departed this life in Hartford. The inventory of William's estate was taken on Friday, 8 August 1659 by Edward Stebbing and George Grave. His estate was valued at 211 pounds, 14 shillings, 11 pence.
